Do you have a strangely specific dream that isn’t exactly life-changing, but you still can’t let go of?

For me, it’s those home office photos on Instagram. Not quite minimalist, but just... nicely put together.

Every piece of clothing has a purpose. The refrigerator contains only what is needed. The indirect lighting is warm and intentional. Everything seems to spark joy.

I like that kind of life. To be fair, I’ve managed to get pretty close in most areas.

I rotate the same clothes like a uniform, and I genuinely like all of them. I only own shoes that I actually wear. Even my pajamas are comfortable and favorites.

My refrigerator isn’t overflowing with mystery containers either.

But there is one thing I simply cannot get right.

The office.

First of all, my desk is huge.

It’s not even a stylish desk. It’s one of those standing desks that look like they belong in a corporate office. Functionally, it’s wonderful. With the push of a button, it adjusts to exactly the height I want. Sitting or standing, it’s perfect.

But aesthetic?

Not even close.

I am apparently a desk enthusiast. Then there’s the monitor. Instagram home offices usually feature a laptop and maybe a small display.

Meanwhile, the monitor that helped me survive graduate school is a 34-inch ultrawide.

Three Word documents at once?

No problem.

Excel spreadsheets and writing?

Absolutely wonderful.

Again, not exactly Instagram-worthy.

The bookshelf isn’t much better. It’s not filled with beloved novels or beautiful art books. It’s mostly research books and piles of materials.

And finally, the crown jewel♡

The printer.

A retired literature professor gave me a brand-new printer. It is roughly the size of the printers we used to have in the graduate student office.

Unlike those painfully slow printers, this one prints surprisingly fast.

Honestly, it’s fantastic. A proper home office. Very comfortable!

For years, I thought that the first step toward creating a beautiful room was quitting graduate school.

Well, I graduated before I got the beautiful room.

Functionality wins.

Still, I haven’t completely given up on my dream of having one of those lovely spaces. This was supposed to be my spark joy era. hmmm…

ガッツリではないけどなんとなくある自分の憧れってありますか？私はインスタとかでミニマリストとまではいかないけど、程よく整った家に住んでいる人の投稿を見るのが結構好きです。

服も靴もカバンも全部がお気に入りで、ちゃーんと使用目的があって、食べ物も必要なだけが冷蔵庫に入っていて、間接照明なんかもぜーんぶ気に入ったものっていうそういう生活に憧れています。

そんな生活を目指して、服は制服のように着回せて、それなりに気に入っているものだけにしているし、靴も運動と仕事に行くのに必要なものだけで履いてないものはないし、パジャマも着心地が良くて気に入っているものだけ。そんなに冷蔵庫もパンパンで管理しきれていないというわけでもないのに、１つだけ！どうしてもうまくいかないところがあります。

それがオフィス！そもそもデスクがデカすぎる。しかもオシャレなデスクでもないめちゃめちゃ普通の会社のオフィスにありそうなスタンディングデスクです。機能的にはなかなか良くて電気も通っているのでボタンひとつで自分の設定した高さにできます。座っていても立っていても快適な高さに！

だけど、オシャレからは遠すぎる！デスクガチ勢！

そしてモニターがこれまたでかい！オシャレなインスタグラマーのホームオフィスはノートパソコンと、多分あっても小さなモニターなのに、私が大学院生活をなんとか乗り越えるために買ったモニターは34インチ（ウルトラワイド）。ワードファイルを３つ開いても全然大丈夫！

エクセル作業と執筆には最高の環境です！でも何度も言ってますがオシャレからは程遠い！

ついでに、本棚もお気に入りの本がいっぱいなわけはなく、ほとんど研究関連の本と資料。

そして極め付けは、印刷機！退職した文学の名誉教授から新品で譲ってもらいました。大学院生の共有オフィスにある大きさと同じ印刷機が家にあることになります。あのイライラするスピードの印刷機ではなくて、なかなかの速さで印刷物が出てくるやつが家にあって最高です。

まさにホームオフィス！とっても快適！

何度も「素敵な部屋を作るにはまず大学院を辞めることが最初のステップ」と思っていましたが、おしゃれな部屋を手に入れる前に卒業しました。やっぱり機能性万歳。

でもやっぱり素敵なお部屋への憧れも捨てきれない！

こんまりでSpark joyしたい人生だった。

How much would you pay for a piece of clothing?

If it’s a wedding dress or a tailored suit, many people might be willing to spend a fortune because it’s something you only do once in a lifetime (or twice, perhaps).

PhD students usually have the option to buy or rent regalia for commencement, which lasts only two or three hours.

Mine cost about $1,600. According to a friend, renting would have cost around $500.

The regalia itself was already expensive enough.

Then I realized I’d probably have to pay for dry cleaning too, because I was sweating like crazy under the sun during commencement (see the link below).

Apparently, academic achievement comes with a velvet maintenance fee.

By the way, the dry cleaning cost about $30, including the tam and hood.

After spending $1,600 on the regalia, thirty dollars somehow didn’t sound ridiculous at all.

みなさん服にいくらぐらい出せますか？私はファッションにすごく興味がある訳ではないですが、昔から肌が弱めな体質なので布が硬くなったり毛羽立ってくると買い替えたくなります。

日本人は結構服にお金をかけると言われてますけど、確かに穴が空いた服とかは外に着て行かないですよね。使い古した服を着ている人を見かけることは、アメリカではすごくすごーく珍しいというわけではないのである意味そうかなとも思います。

ところで今年前半はとんでもなく高い服を買いました。卒業式で着るレガリアです。そのお値段なんと1600ドル。日本円にして約240,000円なり。

こんな高い服あります？振袖？？

振袖は着てもいいし着なくてもいいですけど、レガリアを着ないと卒業式には出られません。日本で育った私には若干理不尽にも感じます。とはいえ、一生に一回だと思うのでなけなしのお金で手に入れたレガリアを炎天下の中着用して出席ました。

暑い。汗が滝のように出てきてクリーニング代はいくらになるのかが懸念されます。

ちなみに帽子、フッド、ガウン込みでクリーニング代は30ドルほどでした。5000円ぐらいですかね。

240,000円払った後なら、5000円なんて安いもんですよ。

One of the unexpected things about teaching language is that students sometimes ask questions you would never see coming.

About three years ago, I was teaching the grammar pattern “~ta koto ga aru,” which is used to talk about past experiences.

Out of nowhere, one student asked me:

“Sensei, have you ever drawn an eye on a daruma?” (Sensei, daruma ni me o kaita koto ga arimasu ka?)

For a first-year student, I remember thinking that was a surprisingly cultural and advanced question.

Traditionally, people fill in one eye of a daruma doll when making a wish, and color in the other eye once the wish comes true.

He told me he had seen a scene in an anime or manga where someone painted an eye onto a daruma doll.

Unfortunately, at the time, I had never actually done it myself.

But the question stayed in my head.

The following summer, during an intensive summer course, I decided to buy tiny daruma-shaped erasers for both my students and myself so we could all make wishes together at the beginning of the semester.

Some students wished,

“Stay healthy until this course ends.”

Others simply wished,

“I want a lot of money.”

Some kept their wishes secret.

Summer intensive classes are usually much smaller, which makes it easier to do little activities like this.

Unlike real daruma dolls, the erasers already had one eye filled in.

Two years ago, my wish was:

“Pass my dissertation defense.”

Last year, it was:

“Submit my dissertation.”

To my past self:

You did it.

You managed to fill in the eyes.

Both times, I ended up using the leftover colors, yellow and red.

There’s a Japanese saying, “Nokorimononi wa fuku ga aru,” which roughly means, “There’s fortune in leftovers.”

So maybe lucky things really do come from leftovers!

And, I guess it’s time to buy another daruma eraser set.

日本語の先生あるあるですが、学生から予想もしない質問をされることがあります。

たしか3年ほど前、「〜したことがある」を勉強していたときのことです。

ある学生が突然、

「先生はダルマに目を描いたことがありますか？」

と聞いてきました。

一年生にしては妙に文化的で高度な質問だな！と思ったのですが、どうやらアニメか漫画でダルマに目を入れるシーンを見たらしいです。

残念ながら、その時の私はまだダルマに目を入れたことがありませんでした。おみくじがダルマの形の入れ物に入っているやつは何個か買ったことがありましたけど。

でも、「ちょっとやってみたいな」と思ったので、次の夏の集中講義で、小さいだるま型の消しゴムを学生と自分用に買っていき、学期の最初にみんなでお願いごとをすることにしました。

「今学期も健康でいられますように」

とか

「お金が欲しい」

とか

「秘密」

とか色々ありました

夏の集中講義は人数が少ないので、こういうちょっとしたイベントができるのが楽しいんですよね。

本物のダルマは両目とも白い状態ですが、買ってきた消しゴムには最初から左目に黒目が入っていました。

2年前のお願いごとは、
「Defense (博論の口頭試問)をする」

去年は、
「博論を提出する」

でした。

過去の自分へ。

ちゃんと両方のダルマに目を入れられたよ。どちらも余った方の色だったけど、余り物には福があるというしね！

また新しいダルマ消しゴムを買わないといけませんなー。

ちなみに、Amazon.com（アメリカのアマゾン） で “Iwako Japanese Daruma Eraser Set” と検索すると出てきます。

日本で買うより随分高いけどまぁ仕方なし。。。

We had a commencement last week. The final big day!

The weather was perfect—no rain, no wind, and absolutely no shade!

Too hot!

We were supposed to arrive at the location by 11:30, and the ceremony started around noon. I felt like I was going to pass out from the heat.

Someone in the line said, “They don’t even give us a bottle of water on our last day.”

Well, but they prepared emergency stretchers! I guess passing out was part of the plan.

別の場所での集合時間が１１時半で式が始まるのが１２時すぎ。待ち時間中に倒れそう！

確かに。

なのにしっかり倒れた人を運び出すためのストレッチャーは用意されているという皮肉！

Have you ever been to the Space Needle in Seattle?

Almost twenty years ago, I went there for the first time. Near the small amusement park, I heard a child screaming:

“Aaaaaaaaaa! Dooooooone! Doooooooooone! NEVER AGAIN! NEVERRRRRRRR!”

The parent was trying to calm them down, but I remember thinking how different people are. I’ve always loved roller coasters, even as a child. I guess you can tell pretty early on whether someone likes that kind of thing or not.

Fast forward to spring 2026.

Job applications, dissertation writing, and teaching. All at one. I learned the hard way how much this life can wear me and my cohort down, both physically and mentally.

Still, when I finally submitted my dissertation, I cried.

I didn’t scream like that child, “NEVER AGAIN!”

… but if it were socially acceptable, I probably would have.

For a moment, thought I could finally rest.

Then my advisor said:

“Well, have you decided where to submit your manuscript? Please revise and prepare it.”

So much for having a break.

随分前、もう20年近く前にシアトルのスペースニードルに初めて行った時に、広場にある小さい遊園地のあたりにいた子供が「ああああああ！Doooooone (もうおわり)! Doooone(もうおわり)! NEVER AGAIN（もう絶対に乗らない）! NEVER（ぜったい）!!」と叫んでいて、親がなだめていたんですが私は子供の時から絶叫系マシーンが好きだったので、この年頃からジェットコースターとかの好き嫌いって決まってるんだなと印象に残っていました。

時は経って2026年の春、

就職活動、博論、授業が重なるとこんなに健康と精神を蝕むんだと身をもって知りました。それでも、ついに博論を提出した後、どれだけこの学位に人生（の一部）を捧げたかを実感して涙が出ました。

大人なので「「ああああああ！Doooooone! Doooone! NEVER AGAIN! NEVER!!」とは叫びませんでしたけど、まぁ社会的に許されるなら叫んでたと思います。（ふたつ博士号を持っている人いますけど、正気ですか？）

それで、やっと束の間の自由かと思ってたら、アドバイザーから

「はよ。提出するジャーナル決めて編集しなされ。」（意訳）

と言われて思い出しました。

大学院生活でしっかりと身についた「あると思うな長期休暇」。

Each semester wears me out slowly. By the last few weeks, I’m usually both emotionally and physically exhausted. Like most students, I can’t wait for it to end.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I’ve been through it—as a student or as a graduate teaching assistant. The end of the semester is always hectic.

Every semester, I teach classes and hold office hours. I spend about twelve hours a week with students. I enjoy working with them, but it can still be draining.

If you’ve ever studied a foreign language, you probably know that even simple phrases can suddenly become difficult to say.

As of today, it’s the last week before final exams begin.

The other day, I asked one of my students in Japanese,
“How many weeks do we have left in this semester?”

The expected answer was something like, “One more week.”

Instead, he said:

“Teacher, there are 47 weeks to go!”

Oh no.
No, no.

毎学期毎学期何回繰り返しても学期末は死にそうな気分になるんですよね。もう最後の方は体力的にも精神的にも死にそうです。

アメリカの大学の一学期は大体セメスター制と言われるものだと14週間から16週間ぐらいが一般的だと思いますが、クラスを履修しながら教えるともう最後の３週間ぐらいは意識が朦朧としてきます。

学部や教える教科にもよってまちまちだと思いますが、私の学部で、基本的に同じ業務内容を任されているチームメンバーは大体1週間に12時間ぐらい学生と過ごします。授業をしたりオフィスアワーをしたり。

中にはパンチの効いたことを言う学生が紛れていて、先日はあと1週間で今学期が終わるという時期に、

わたし「今学期はあと何週間ぐらいありますか？」

と聞いたところ元気に

学生「先生！今学期はあと47週間ありますよ！」

と答えてくれました。

もうそんな元気残ってません。

勘弁してくれ。

The famous tweet by @ajiswriting states, “but would your thesis defend YOU?” (Unfortunately, I could not find the original post because the account is now private.) This tweet was genuinely shocking when I first read it, as it captures what many PhD students feel deep down.

My dissertation took a significant toll on me, both mentally and physically. I experienced some challenging moments throughout this process. The final year of my PhD taught me that stress can lead to unexpected consequences. I had a few campus interviews following several online ones. Being invited for in-person interviews is usually a good sign, but it was something I had never done before. Naturally, I felt very nervous and under a lot of pressure, especially since I also had to finish my thesis at the same time.

One day, while walking down the main street of the city, I realized I could not read the signs clearly with my right eye. I visited an optometrist to request a new pair of glasses, hoping to have them ready before my campus visit scheduled in two weeks. If you have purchased glasses abroad, such as in South Korea, Taiwan, or Japan, you may know that making glasses typically takes a few hours or at most a few days. I wasn’t expecting that kind of speed here in the U.S., but I was hopeful for a notification in about 1 to 1.5 weeks. Unfortunately, I did not receive one and ended up going without any visual aids.

After returning from the visit, I got a call from the office informing me that my glasses were ready for pickup. When I arrived, they handed me the brand-new blue-framed glasses and asked me to try them on. The staff pointed to a sign on a nearby building visible from the window. Right before I put them on, I realized something didn’t seem right; I could already see the sign clearly. I mean, my right eye wasn’t as good as my left, but I had no issues reading it already. I wondered if I really needed these glasses after all.

When I finally put them on, I discovered that the prescription for my right eye was too strong, but I had already spent a day getting through the exam for it and had already paid for them. I said ‘perfect!’ and left the office with them.

I realized that stress can impact your eyesight. I wonder what other unexpected health issues PhD students might be experiencing...

A small good thing about being invited to a campus interview is getting to visit a place you’ve never been before for free.

前に @ajiswriting という人がX（当時はTwitter）でつぶやいた, “but would your thesis defend YOU?” （でもさ、あんたの論文はあなたを守ってくれんの？）を読んで衝撃を受けたことがありました。英語だと博士をとるために最終段階で公聴会とか博士論文審査会とか言われるものがあり、論文審査委員からボコボコにされつつも博士論文での主張をdefense(守る)というプロセスがあります。学生の方は必死になって博論を守りますけど、さてはて論文の方は書き手を守ってくれるのか？？

私の知っている大学院生の多くが不健康でちょっとした心の病気になっている気がします。私は幸い鬱っぽい症状は出なかったように思いますが、それでもこの最後のアカデミックイヤーはいろいろとありました。

まず仕事がいるので、博士論文を仕上げながら就職活動もしなくてはいけません。ついでにクラスも通常通り教えなくてはいけません。これがもう大変で大変でほんとうに辛かったです。

限界が近づくのか、ある日大学前の通りを歩いていたら右目が見えにくいことに気がついたんです。近くのスターバックスの看板が見えにくい。「あーついに視力が落ちてきたか。」と思ったので、数週間後に控えていたキャンパスインタビュー（現地に行って１−３日かけて面接をするアメリカの就活プロセス）に行く前にメガネを作っておくか！と眼科へ駆け込みました。

数時間かけて目の検査をしてメガネを作ってもらう手筈を整え、待てど暮らせど結局連絡来ず。仕方ないので、メガネなしでキャンパスインタビューへ。帰ってきてからようやく眼科付属の眼鏡屋さんから連絡を受け、メガネを受け取りに行きました。感じのいい担当の方に席を薦められ「あそこのサイン（窓から見えるビルの看板）、メガネをかけるとよく見えると思いますよ。どうぞ」と言われメガネを手渡されました。

でも、メガネを受け取る前からそのサイン結構くっきり見えていました。

もともと右目は左目ほど視力がよくないんですが、それでももうよく見えてるなと思いつつ、メガネをかけると歪む視界。思い出すのは子供のころ虫眼鏡を通して見た世界。「パーフェクトですねぇ」と言って受け取り帰宅。一回も使ってません。

ありがとう保険。もうちょっとで使えないメガネに何百ドルも払うところだった。

ストレスは視力にも影響することがあるんだなと学んだ博士課程終盤でした。

死ぬほど辛いキャンパスインタビューですが、いいこともあって、一生行くことがないかもしれないと思っていたところに無料で連れていってくれる機会になることもあります。それからかならずおもしろいことが起こるので人生に彩りを与えてくれます。（写真は最後に行ったキャンパスインタビューの帰りに撮った空港にて）

I recently completed my PhD and have been unsure about what comes next.

I began my academic journey around ten years ago in the US. I majored in Linguistics as an undergraduate, then continued on to a Master’s. Toward the end of it, I found a topic I wanted to explore, so I kept going.

I stayed at the same institution the entire time, though I changed my main department when I started my Master’s. I did not consider moving elsewhere because the school offered me a scholarship and a TA position, which mattered a lot. I still have student loan debt from my undergraduate studies, so having that stability was important.

There were definitely ups and downs, of course, but I think I was one of the fortunate ones. My advisor is very approachable and patient, and that made a big difference.

That was something I learned from an old friend who was also in graduate school. At that time, I didn’t fully understand how much she was struggling with her advisor.

I also knew some people who left academia or never finished their PhDs. They were at institutions I could never have gotten into, which made me realize that getting a PhD is not just about effort, but it’s also about luck. Luck can determine whether you can get through the difficult parts and reach the end.

For a long time, I thought I would feel happy once I finished my dissertation or once I had at least some kind of answer to the stupid question I had made up.

So, what now?

The day I submitted my dissertation, I had Panda Express for dinner. I was too tired to cook.

Inside my little tusjiura senbei (fortune cookie), it said:
‘SEEK NEW CHALLENGES.’

Well…, I guess I need some more.

つい先日博士論文を提出してから、一歩先は闇状態です。博士課程中もまっくらだったのにその後もあいかわらずです。

10年ぐらい前にアメリカで言語学部の学生として勉強しはじめて、その後修士も同じ大学でとりました。修士を終える頃に新しいおもしろそうなトピックを見つけて、そのまま博士にもいくことにしました。

学部から博士まで同じ大学にいたことになります。普通アメリカでは所属を変えたりするもんですけど、あのころはちょうどコロナで他の学校に行けそうな雰囲気でもなかったのと、今の学校が奨学金とTAの仕事を保証してくたのでメインで所属する学部だけ変更して行くことにしました。正直、学部の時の奨学金が結構あったので、経済的な理由が決め手だったと思います。アメリカの大学は目玉が飛び出るほど高いので、一般庶民にはきつい。

正直大学院は楽しいことがある反面、苦しいことがかなり多かったです。でも、運良く私のアドバイザーは話しやすい人で、これは本当に助かりました。もしこれから大学院に行こうかなと思っている人にはアドバイザーとの性格が合うかも絶対に確認してほしいです。

以前、私が逆立ちしても入学できないような有名な大学院に所属していた頭のいい先輩というか、友達と言うかわからないですけど、とにかくよくしてくださっていた素敵な人がいたんですが、ずっとアドバイザーとの関係に悩んでいて結局大学院を辞めてしまいました。

余計なお世話ですけど、めちゃめちゃ勝手に本人の知らぬところで悔しがりました。あとは博士論文を終わらせるだけだったので、もう１２、3年前ぐらい経ちましたが今でもほんとうに勿体無いと思っています。（でも本人はもしかしたら学位にこだわりがなかったかもしれません。）

私の方といえば頭もよくないし、ただ博士課程を修了した人ですが、これを終わらせるという目標のためだけに生きていたので、実際に終わった今これから何をしたらいいんだろうという気持ちでいっぱいです。

ただ、博士論文を提出した日にアメリカの有名チェーン店レストラン『パンダエクスプレス』からお告げがありました。アメリカでよくある中華料理店に行くとなぜか、辻占煎餅（フォーチューンクッキー）がもらえるんですが、開けてびっくり

「新しい挑戦をしろ」
‘SEEK NEW CHALLENGES.’

って書いてましたね。私の博論のレベルが低すぎてパンダの神様から承認いただけなかったのかもしれません。まぁ、それは納得です。もっと頑張れということですかね。はい。
