Make a Wish and Fill in an Eye!
七転び八起きと言うけど普通のダルマは自分では立ち上がらないよね？

One of the unexpected things about teaching language is that students sometimes ask questions you would never see coming.
About three years ago, I was teaching the grammar pattern “~ta koto ga aru,” which is used to talk about past experiences.
Out of nowhere, one student asked me:
“Sensei, have you ever drawn an eye on a daruma?” (Sensei, daruma ni me o kaita koto ga arimasu ka?)
For a first-year student, I remember thinking that was a surprisingly cultural and advanced question.
Traditionally, people fill in one eye of a daruma doll when making a wish, and color in the other eye once the wish comes true.
He told me he had seen a scene in an anime or manga where someone painted an eye onto a daruma doll.
Unfortunately, at the time, I had never actually done it myself.
But the question stayed in my head.
The following summer, during an intensive summer course, I decided to buy tiny daruma-shaped erasers for both my students and myself so we could all make wishes together at the beginning of the semester.
Some students wished,
“Stay healthy until this course ends.”
Others simply wished,
“I want a lot of money.”
Some kept their wishes secret.
Summer intensive classes are usually much smaller, which makes it easier to do little activities like this.
Unlike real daruma dolls, the erasers already had one eye filled in.
Two years ago, my wish was:
“Pass my dissertation defense.”
Last year, it was:
“Submit my dissertation.”
To my past self:
You did it.
You managed to fill in the eyes.
Both times, I ended up using the leftover colors, yellow and red.
There’s a Japanese saying, “Nokorimononi wa fuku ga aru,” which roughly means, “There’s fortune in leftovers.”
So maybe lucky things really do come from leftovers!
And, I guess it’s time to buy another daruma eraser set.

日本語の先生あるあるですが、学生から予想もしない質問をされることがあります。
たしか3年ほど前、「〜したことがある」を勉強していたときのことです。
ある学生が突然、
「先生はダルマに目を描いたことがありますか？」
と聞いてきました。
一年生にしては妙に文化的で高度な質問だな！と思ったのですが、どうやらアニメか漫画でダルマに目を入れるシーンを見たらしいです。
残念ながら、その時の私はまだダルマに目を入れたことがありませんでした。おみくじがダルマの形の入れ物に入っているやつは何個か買ったことがありましたけど。
でも、「ちょっとやってみたいな」と思ったので、次の夏の集中講義で、小さいだるま型の消しゴムを学生と自分用に買っていき、学期の最初にみんなでお願いごとをすることにしました。
「今学期も健康でいられますように」
とか
「お金が欲しい」
とか
「秘密」
とか色々ありました
夏の集中講義は人数が少ないので、こういうちょっとしたイベントができるのが楽しいんですよね。
本物のダルマは両目とも白い状態ですが、買ってきた消しゴムには最初から左目に黒目が入っていました。
2年前のお願いごとは、
「Defense (博論の口頭試問)をする」
去年は、
「博論を提出する」
でした。
過去の自分へ。
ちゃんと両方のダルマに目を入れられたよ。どちらも余った方の色だったけど、余り物には福があるというしね！
また新しいダルマ消しゴムを買わないといけませんなー。

日本で買うより随分高いけどまぁ仕方なし。。。
