How much would you pay for a piece of clothing?

If it’s a wedding dress or a tailored suit, many people might be willing to spend a fortune because it’s something you only do once in a lifetime (or twice, perhaps).

PhD students usually have the option to buy or rent regalia for commencement, which lasts only two or three hours.

Mine cost about $1,600. According to a friend, renting would have cost around $500.

The regalia itself was already expensive enough.

Then I realized I’d probably have to pay for dry cleaning too, because I was sweating like crazy under the sun during commencement (see the link below).

Apparently, academic achievement comes with a velvet maintenance fee.

By the way, the dry cleaning cost about $30, including the tam and hood.

After spending $1,600 on the regalia, thirty dollars somehow didn’t sound ridiculous at all.

みなさん服にいくらぐらい出せますか？私はファッションにすごく興味がある訳ではないですが、昔から肌が弱めな体質なので布が硬くなったり毛羽立ってくると買い替えたくなります。

日本人は結構服にお金をかけると言われてますけど、確かに穴が空いた服とかは外に着て行かないですよね。使い古した服を着ている人を見かけることは、アメリカではすごくすごーく珍しいというわけではないのである意味そうかなとも思います。

ところで今年前半はとんでもなく高い服を買いました。卒業式で着るレガリアです。そのお値段なんと1600ドル。日本円にして約240,000円なり。

こんな高い服あります？振袖？？

振袖は着てもいいし着なくてもいいですけど、レガリアを着ないと卒業式には出られません。日本で育った私には若干理不尽にも感じます。とはいえ、一生に一回だと思うのでなけなしのお金で手に入れたレガリアを炎天下の中着用して出席ました。

暑い。汗が滝のように出てきてクリーニング代はいくらになるのかが懸念されます。

ちなみに帽子、フッド、ガウン込みでクリーニング代は30ドルほどでした。5000円ぐらいですかね。

240,000円払った後なら、5000円なんて安いもんですよ。
